Choosing a snorkel mask: full face or a classic mask with snorkel?

While it is grey and cold at home, more and more people head for the winter sun, for example to the Red Sea, the Canary Islands or the Caribbean. There you can snorkel among colourful fish in winter too. But which snorkel mask do you choose: a full face mask or a classic diving mask with a snorkel? In this article we set out the differences.

Full face snorkel mask

A full face mask covers your whole face. The snorkel is fixed on top.

  • Advantages: you simply breathe through your nose and mouth, you have a wide view and it is easy for beginners and children.
  • Disadvantages: the mask is larger, so it takes up more room in your case. It is also only intended for snorkelling at the surface. Diving down is not suitable, because you cannot equalise the pressure in your ears.

Classic diving mask with snorkel

A classic mask covers your eyes and nose. You breathe through your mouth via a separate snorkel.

  • Advantages: compact, suitable for the occasional dive below the surface and easy to carry.
  • Disadvantages: breathing through your mouth takes some getting used to for beginners.

A snorkel with a dry top closes automatically when a wave washes over it or when you dive under. That way you get water in your mouth less easily.

How to choose the right size

A mask that does not fit properly will leak. Test it like this: hold the mask against your face without the strap and breathe in gently through your nose. If the mask stays in place by itself, it seals well. For a full face mask, choose the size that suits your face, and for children look for a children's model.

Tips for snorkelling safely

  1. Never snorkel alone and agree a signal with your snorkel buddy.
  2. Ask locally about currents and choose a calm, sheltered spot.
  3. Snorkel calmly and take regular breaks. Heavy exertion is not wise with a full face mask.
  4. Do not touch coral or animals: coral is fragile and some species sting.
  5. Wear a shirt with UV protection: your back burns quickly when you lie face down in the water.
  6. Keep your phone in a waterproof phone case and your things on the beach in a dry bag.
