Bike lights: rules and tips for being clearly seen

On Sunday 25 October the clocks go back an hour. It gets dark earlier in the afternoon and you will more often be cycling home from school or work in the dark. Good bike lights are not a luxury then: you see better where you are riding and, more importantly, others see you in time. In this article you will read what the rules are and how to be as visible as possible on the bike.

When must you use lights?

In the Netherlands your bike lights must be on between sunset and sunrise, and during the day in poor visibility such as fog or heavy rain. That applies even when the street itself is well lit.

The rules at a glance

  • Front light: white or yellow, and not flashing.
  • Rear light: red, and also not flashing.
  • Clip-on lights are allowed, as long as they are clearly visible and shine straight ahead and straight behind.
  • Reflectors: a red reflector at the back, yellow reflectors on the pedals and reflection at the side, for example reflective tyres or reflectors in the wheels.

Cycling in the dark without working lights risks a fine. You will find the current rules on the Dutch government website.

How to be clearly seen

  • Aim your front lamp slightly downwards. That lights the road without dazzling oncoming traffic.
  • Make sure your rear light is not covered by a bag, coat or rain poncho.
  • Wear light or reflective clothing, or use a bag or rain cover with reflective details.
  • Charge rechargeable lights at a fixed moment, for example every Sunday evening. Then they will not give up halfway through your ride.
  • Take clip-on lights with you when you leave your bike somewhere. That prevents theft.

Rechargeable or on batteries?

Rechargeable bike lights charge over USB, for example from your laptop, phone charger or a power bank. You do not have to buy batteries and you notice in good time when the battery is running low. Lights on batteries are handy as a spare, but remember to check the batteries regularly.

Travelhawk Bike Light Set

The Travelhawk Bike Light Set consists of a rechargeable LED front light and an LED rear light. You charge them with the supplied USB-C cable and the lights are water-resistant, so a shower is no problem.
