Buying a sleeping mat for comfortable camping

A good sleeping mat makes a night in the tent a good deal more comfortable. You lie softer, feel less of hard or uneven ground and create an insulating layer between yourself and the ground.

In our range you will find sleeping mats for one or two people. The models are 10 cm thick and compact to carry. That makes them suitable for a weekend's camping, a festival, a road trip or a longer holiday with the tent.

Our sleeping mats offer, among other things:

  • a thickness of 10 cm for extra lying comfort;
  • a choice of models for one or two people;
  • insulation against cold ground;
  • a compact size for travelling;
  • a carry bag for easy transport;
  • a handy inflation system.

Which sleeping mat suits you?

Which sleeping mat you choose depends mainly on the number of people, the dimensions you want and the conditions you will be camping in.

Camping alone? Then you can choose from several single models.

The Travelhawk self-inflating air bed is 200 cm long, 70 cm wide and 10 cm thick. The mat weighs 876 grams and has an R-value of 2.5. That gives you plenty of room to lie down without having to take a large traditional air bed.

The Travelhawk self-inflating sleeping mat is 195 cm long and 68 cm wide. This model is also 10 cm thick. With an R-value of 3, this sleeping mat offers slightly more insulation against cold ground.

A sleeping mat for two people

Camping together? Then one wide sleeping mat can be more pleasant than two separate mats side by side.

The Travelhawk sleeping mat for 2 people is 137 cm wide and 10 cm thick. The mat has an R-value of 3 and offers one continuous sleeping surface for two people.

That way you are not bothered during the night by a gap between two separate sleeping mats. And you only have one mat to pack away when you travel on.

What does a sleeping mat's R-value mean?

When choosing a sleeping mat, do not look only at the thickness. The R-value matters too.

The R-value indicates how much resistance the sleeping mat offers to heat loss towards the ground. The higher the value, the better the insulation.

That matters especially on cooler nights. The ground can give off a lot of cold, even when the outside temperature is still reasonably pleasant.

So when making your choice, take into account:

  • the season you are camping in;
  • the expected minimum temperature;
  • the ground;
  • the lying comfort you want;
  • the room in your luggage.

Inflating your sleeping mat easily

After a long day you want to be able to set up your sleeping spot quickly. That is why our sleeping mats are designed to be easy to get ready for use.

With the self-inflating sleeping mat you pump with your foot above the valve on the underside. After about one to two minutes the mat is ready for use.

That means you do not have to take a big separate pump. After your night's sleep you let the air out of the sleeping mat again and store it in the supplied carry bag.

Combine your sleeping mat with a sleeping bag

A sleeping mat forms the basis of your sleeping spot. For warmth during the night you also need a suitable sleeping bag.

So also take a look at our sleeping bags. Look at the comfort temperature and match it to the season you will be camping in.

By matching your sleeping bag and sleeping mat properly, you turn your tent into a comfortable place to sleep without taking unnecessarily much gear.
