Winter sports packing list: what to take on a ski holiday

In a few weeks the first ski resorts will open again. Whether this is your first winter sports holiday or you have been skiing or snowboarding for years: with a good packing list you forget nothing and stand on the slopes warm and well prepared on that first morning. In this article you will find a complete packing list for your ski holiday, with tips for packing smartly.

The layering principle: how to stay warm and dry

On the slopes, cold, wind, sun and exertion take turns. That is why you dress in three layers:

  1. Base layer: thermal underwear that sits close to your skin and wicks moisture away.
  2. Mid layer: a fleece or thin jumper that holds in warmth.
  3. Outer layer: a waterproof, windproof ski jacket and ski trousers.

If you get warm you simply remove a layer. If it gets colder you put it back on.

Ski clothing

  • Ski jacket and ski trousers (waterproof and breathable)
  • Thermal underwear: top and bottoms as a base layer, preferably two sets so you can change
  • Fleece or mid layer
  • Ski socks: one pair per day or per two days. Never wear two pairs of socks in your ski boot; that pinches and actually makes your feet colder.

Protection for head, face and hands

  • Ski helmet: a helmet is not compulsory on many slopes, but is strongly recommended. The Travelhawk ski helmet has a sturdy outer shell, a shock-absorbing inner and is adjustable, in sizes S/M and L/XL.
  • Ski goggles, for visibility in snow, wind and flat light
  • Sunglasses with UV400 for the terrace and sunny days: snow reflects sunlight strongly
  • Balaclava or neck warmer against icy wind and snow in your face
  • Ski gloves or mittens, and a thin pair for around the village
  • Winter hat for after skiing
  • High-factor sun cream and lip balm with SPF

For the village and your accommodation

  • Warm coat and waterproof winter boots with grip
  • Touchscreen gloves, so you can use your phone without cold hands
  • Waterproof gloves for snowballs and walking
  • Comfortable clothing and slippers for indoors
  • Swimwear (many hotels and apartments have a spa or pool)
  • Hot water bottle for cold evenings

Electronics and handy extras

  • Power bank: in the cold your phone battery drains faster. Keep your phone and power bank in an inside pocket.
  • Charger and cables
  • A travel adapter if you are going to Switzerland: an earthed Dutch plug often does not fit there
  • Wash bag and travel bottles
  • Small backpack for the slopes
  • Small first aid kit with blister plasters

Documents and money

  • Passport or ID card
  • Travel and winter sports insurance (check that winter sports are covered)
  • EHIC health card
  • Bank card and some cash
  • Bookings for accommodation, lift pass and ski rental

Packing tips

  1. Wear your ski boots or heaviest clothing while travelling; that saves room and weight in your case.
  2. Pack by category, for example base layers, socks and accessories, so you quickly find what you need once there.
  3. Put gloves, hat and neck warmer together in one bag, so you grab them all at once in the morning.
  4. Going by car? Check whether you need winter tyres or snow chains in your destination country.

Frequently asked questions

What do you wear under your ski clothing?

Thermal underwear as a base layer, possibly with a fleece as a mid layer. Avoid cotton: it holds moisture and feels cold.

How many pairs of ski socks do you need?

Take at least one pair per two days of skiing. Let them dry thoroughly after each day, or take a dry pair for every day.

Is a ski helmet compulsory?

That differs per country and age. In a number of countries a helmet is compulsory for children. For adults it is often not compulsory, but strongly recommended.

Do I need sunglasses on a winter sports holiday?

Yes. Snow reflects a lot of sunlight. Sunglasses or goggles with UV protection protect your eyes, on cloudy days too.
