Walking pole or Nordic walking poles: what length do you need?
You see walking poles more and more often, and not without reason. They give support on uneven terrain, help you uphill and downhill, and with Nordic walking you use your arms and upper body too. But the pole does need to be the right length. In this article you will read the difference between a walking pole and Nordic walking poles and how to set them up properly.

Walking pole or Nordic walking poles?
- Walking pole (trekking pole): mainly used for support and balance, for example on hills, in the mountains or on muddy paths. You plant the pole in front of you.
- Nordic walking poles: always used two at a time. You plant them at an angle behind you and actively push yourself forward. That trains your arms, shoulders and back as well as your legs.
The right length for a walking pole
Stand the tip of the pole on the ground next to your foot and take hold of the handle. Your elbow should then be at roughly 90 degrees. That is the right length for flat terrain.
- Uphill: shorten the pole by 5 to 10 cm.
- Downhill: lengthen the pole by 5 to 10 cm, so you have more support and your knees take less strain.
The right length for Nordic walking poles
For Nordic walking a common rule of thumb is: your height x 0.68, rounded to 5 cm. If you are a beginner, go slightly shorter rather than longer.
| Height | Nordic walking pole length |
|---|---|
| 155 - 162 cm | approx. 105 - 110 cm |
| 163 - 170 cm | approx. 110 - 115 cm |
| 171 - 178 cm | approx. 115 - 120 cm |
| 179 - 186 cm | approx. 120 - 125 cm |
| 187 - 194 cm | approx. 125 - 130 cm |
With adjustable poles you can tune the length exactly to yourself and change it later.
How to start with Nordic walking
- First walk a short stretch dragging the poles behind you, so you settle into your natural rhythm.
- Move your arms diagonally with your legs: left leg forward, right arm forward.
- Plant the pole at an angle behind you and push yourself off actively.
- Open your hand a little as your arm swings back. The strap holds the pole.
Travelhawk walking poles
- The Travelhawk Walking Pole is adjustable and foldable, so you can easily carry it in or on your backpack after the climb.
- The Travelhawk Nordic Walking Poles are a set of two adjustable aluminium poles with cork handles.

Frequently asked questions
How long should a Nordic walking pole be?
A common rule of thumb is your height x 0.68. If you are 175 cm, that gives about 120 cm.

Stand the tip next to your foot and hold the handle: your elbow should be at roughly 90 degrees. Uphill you shorten the pole a little, downhill you lengthen it a little.
